ECG OET Speaking Role Play
24 March Exam Question
Patient Vs Nurse
Nurse: Hi good morning. My name is Marshal Sandy. I
am one of the registered nurses working in this community health centre. Can
you please confirm the reason for your visit?
Patient: Nurse: I
have been referred by my General Practitioner for an ECG since I had
experienced chest pain.
Nurse: All right.
Before proceeding further, may I know your name and age for the verification?
Please
Patient: Sure Nurse:
My name is Mackie and I am 50 years old.
Nurse: Thank you for
the confirmation. How are you feeling now?
Patient: Well nurse.
At the moment I don't have any chest pain, but I am a bit anxious about ECG.
Nurse: Your
anxiousness is quite understandable. Can you please explain why you feel
anxious about ECG? Thus, I will be able to help you out.
Patient: That sounds
good Nurse. The thing is that I am a little anxious as I have never had an ECG
before and I am not quite sure what it involves.
Nurse: Thank you for
sharing your anxiety me here. I want to assure you that ECG is not an invasive
procedure so nothing to be Panic about. Before proceeding further, I will
explain what ECG is and then you will be okay with it.
Patient: That's right
Nurse, you may please proceed.
Nurse: Yes, Mackie ECG
is a simple diagnostic technique to identify the electrical activity of your
heart. First of all, you need to remove clothing from the waist up and need to
lay almost flat on the bed. Once you are settled on the bed, we will attach
electrodes to your arms, legs, and chest and then those leads will be connected
to an ECG recording machine which can print graphs of heart activity. This
procedure can be completed in a few minutes.
Patient: Okay Nurse,
It sounds that the ECG is a straightforward procedure, so I hope you will be
able to look at the graph and tell me what exactly causes my chest pain.
Nurse: Your thoughts
are sensible. However, I am sorry to say that I am not the authoritative person
to tell you about the result. Try not to worry about it. The doctor would see
your ECG graphs and after evaluation he will explain to you all the underlying
things without much delay. I hope it is clear to you
Patient: Yes nurse.
Actually, I didn't realize that it was the Doctor Who Would analyze the
results, but I am glad that it will be done quickly.
Nurse: Yes, sure.
Thank you for your understanding me here. Do you have any other concerns?
Patient: Yes Nurse. I
just want to know whether this ECG is painful or not.
Nurse: I realize what
you're going through right now. As I have mentioned before, this is not an
invasive procedure, hence it is not painful and also it is a safe procedure as
well. Perhaps you can expect some possibility of slight discomfort during the
removal of electrodes which are attached to your body, almost similar to the
minor discomfort while removing a bandage.
Patient: Oh, I see
Nurse: that's all Mackie,
so be relaxed. I can assure you that you will be comfortable during the
procedure.
Patient: All right.
It is clear for me now nurse. I hope that after undergoing this procedure, I
can come to know what is wrong with my chest. Isn't it?
Nurse: Yes, of course
he said you could read your heart rate and analyze the irregularities and
palpitations efficiently. This could act as an initial diagnostic test.
Sometimes after the Eck, the doctor may ask you to undergo further tests to
find out the exact cause of your chest pain and it is completely up to the
doctor's decision based on the requirements.
Patient: All right, I
got it.
Nurse: Well Mackie
Before moving on to the procedure, I just want to confirm that: are you
carrying any jewalery or mobile phone with you
Patient: No Nurse: I
don't wear any jewalery and don't have a phone either.
Nurse: That's great.
It is nothing because these things can make some false changes in your ECG
diagnosis. That's why I asked you.
Patient: That's okay
Nurse: No worries.
Nurse: All right Mackie
Now do you have any other questions to clarify?
Patient: No Nurse: I
am clear about the ECG.
Nurse: Good to hear
that. Are you ready for the procedure?
Patient: Yes. Nurse:
I am ready.
Nurse: That's
perfect. Can you please give me the consent to start the procedure?
Patient: Then sure
Nurse you may please start the procedure.
Nurse: Thank you for
your consent and cooperation.
