 Patient VS Nurse

Nurse : Hello good morning. My name is OET Answers and I am one of the nurses in this hospital ward. I will be attending to you here today. How are you now?


Patient : I am getting better now.. 


Nurse : All right, for confirmation, may I know your full name and your age please.


Patient : My full name is Grace Yai. I am 52 years old.


Nurse : Thank you for the confirmation Grace. The purpose of my visit is to do the clinical observations such as to take the temperature, check blood pressure etc… 


Patient : Okay nurse..


Nurse : May I know, how you are feeling right now? 


Patient : It was really frightening, I couldn’t breathe when I had an allergic reaction. Now, my breathing is getting a bit easier but I really have a bad headache. 


Nurse : I can understand your situation Grace. The possible causes for your headache might be dehydration, exhaustion or might be the after effect of an allergic reaction. 


Patient : Okay.. 


Nurse : Don’t worry Grace. I can provide you with pain relief medications and also a cup of tea, which will make you more comfortable.


Patient : Thank you nurse. Pain relief and a cup of tea sounds like a good idea. Great, but nurse how long I will need to stay in the hospital? 


Nurse : Your thoughts are reasonable Grace; however, I am sorry to say that I won’t be able to provide you with the time scale for your hospitalization. It is the doctor’s decision and is based on several factors too.


Patient : Oh all right..


Nurse : Grace, the reason is for the safety of you. It is really essential to have close monitoring to ensure that you are stabilized. In your case breathing oxygen saturation, blood pressure and temperature are a few parameters for that. Hence, the doctor’s decision is vital. I hope I am clear to you.


Patient : Yes nurse I understand your words also I hope my chemotherapy treatment won’t be affected.


Nurse : Grace, I really wanted to appreciate you for being optimistic rather than being concerned about the treatment. You are looking forward hopefully to your unaffected chemotherapy. I would like to point out to you that there are multiple ways to deal with allergic reactions.


Patient : Oh good to hear that nurse. 


Nurse : Definitely some of the possible ways being alternative chemotherapy drugs, immunotherapy,  slower delivery of treatment etc..  Grace, I can reassure you that there are multiple successful ways of dealing with an allergic reaction. More pieces of information will be provided by the doctor.


Patient : All right nurse. Thank you for your assurance.


Nurse : No worries Grace. It’s part of my duty.Do you have any other concerns to be addressed?


Patient : Nurse actually I was only supposed to be in hospital for a few hours, so my family is going to be expecting me home and they’ll be worried if I am late.


Nurse : Yes you are absolutely right. I will definitely contact your family straight away after the clinical observations, I will inform them of the situation and also arranged for a visit or an overnight bag as things are not yet confirmed.


Patient : That will be a great help nurse with pleasure.


Nurse : Grace, is there anything else I have to do for you.


Patient : If you don’t mind, I am very hungry as I haven’t eaten anything since early this morning.


Nurse : Don’t worry, I will check with the doctor about food and they will make necessary arrangements for that.


Patient : Thank you nurse.


Nurse : So Grace I need your consent to do the clinical observations. May I proceed with the procedures. 


Patient : Sure nurse. it’s fine to do the clinical observations. you may please proceed.


Nurse : Thank you for the cooperation....
